Two migrant centres run by Italy in Albania opened for business on Friday, marking the first time a European country has managed to shift its migrant processing off shore.
“As of today, the two centers are ready and operational,” Fabrizio Bucci, Italy’s ambassador to Albania, said at the port of Shengjin, north of Tirana, where migrants will disembark at the first centre after being intercepted in the Mediterranean.
From there migrants will be taken 22km inland to a second, 6.8-hectare centre at Gjader where their asylum requests will be processed within a month. If accepted they will be taken to Italy, or repatriated if turned down.
