The Swiss city hosts many festive events throughout the season and is the perfect place to catch up on any last-minute Christmas shopping.
From November 28 until December 23, Basel hosts one of the most popular Christmas markets in Europe.
It was voted the winner of the European Best Christmas Markets and has lots to offer.
The Christmas markets are held in the centre of the city on Barfüsserplatz and on Münsterplatz.
The markets are free to enter and there is a range of delicious food and mulled wine to eat and drink while shopping.
A large Christmas tree decorates the centre, while there are over 100 vendors dotted around.
Barfüsserplatz has a towering festive pyramid measuring 13 meters in height and is designed to look like a traditional ‘Erzgebirge Christmas Pyramid’.
You can get handmade souvenirs, gifts and clothes, so it is the perfect place to complete your Christmas shopping.
The market is open daily from 11am to 8.30pm.
On December 23, the Christmas Market on Barfüsserplatz closes at 8pm and the one on Münsterplatz closes at 6pm.

If you want to get some last-minute shopping done, the many shops in the city are covered in glowing lights, so you can take a picturesque shopping trip.
100 pine trees border the streets, making it feel like a winter wonderland.
Every year during the Advent period, the stairwell of St. Martin’s Tower is lit up in the evening between 4pm and 6pm from Monday to Friday.
From December 4 to December 22, the tower offers a unique view of the Christmas lights in the Old Town.
In the courtyard of the City Hall, you can fill in your wishes for the Advent season in the Basel Wish Book.
Ryanair offers flights to Basel from €24.99 and it is a two-hour flight.
