The initiative marks a major shift for the telecommunications giant, which currently manages its logistics in each of the individual nations in which it operates. Vodafone executives recognise that centralising the operation will be a game changer for the company.
Luka Mucic, Chief Financial Officer of Vodafone group, made the case for the hub’s development, saying: “The creation of a new pan-European logistics hub in Luxembourg is in line with our strategy to simplify the way we run Vodafone and our commitment to being as cost-efficient as possible in our operations and supply chain.”
Location, location, location
Bettembourg’s strategically important location marked it out as the ideal site for Vodafone’s push for greater efficiency.
Lying just south of the Luxembourgish capital and on the main rail and road routes towards France, Bettembourg is a major logistics hub for Luxembourg and the Greater Region.
Sitting at the junction of two major motorways, as well as on the confluence of at least three rail routes, with access to a multimodal freight terminal and a high-tech logistics park, the town will act as a gateway to Europe for the technology company.
Vodafone’s 26,000-square-metre premises, developed by UK-based MG Real Estate, will join hundreds of other businesses at the rail-motorway hub, all taking advantage of the area’s fast links across Europe—from Turkey to Scandinavia.
Investment welcomed by Luxembourg
Vodafone already employs around 420 people in Luxembourg in its procurement and global roaming services divisions. Company bosses hope the new hub will create more than 30 direct jobs, with more roles coming through partnerships with logistics providers.
Franz Fayot, the country’s Minister of the Economy, expressed his enthusiasm for the deal, saying Vodafone’s expansion is a clear signal of confidence in Luxembourg’s status as a leading logistics hub.
He added: “The increased presence of a leader in technology communication, such as Vodafone, strengthens and diversifies the sectors of high value-added logistics and industry.”
Luka Mucic, Chief Financial Officer of Vodafone group, was keen to heap praise on Luxembourg, saying: “This investment will also reinforce Luxembourg’s position as a world-class logistics centre.”
