Enclosed by a 20ft-high metal fence, the men locked in Italy’s new migrant processing centre in Gjader, Albania, will be given regulation blue or black sweatshirts to wear and will sleep four to a prefabricated container, each with a USB plug for their phones.
Outdoors, they can congregate in a small courtyard where the concrete is painted lime green. If they look up they will see goats gazing down on them from the hillside above the centre.
“We painted the ground green because it will have a calming effect on our guests,” said an Italian official preparing to open the gates for the first arrivals, who are expected imminently.
