ENGIE Acquires First Biomethane Plant in Belgium to Boost Renewable Energy Production

(IN BRIEF) ENGIE has expanded its biomethane production in Europe by acquiring its first facility in Belgium, located in Bree. The plant, operational since 2013, will be converted to biomethane production by October 2024, with a capacity of 68 GWh per year, supplying energy to 6,000 households. This acquisition is part of ENGIE’s goal to produce 10 TWh of biomethane annually across Europe and strengthens its position in renewable energy.

(PRESS RELEASE) LA DÈFENSE, 16-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — ENGIE has strengthened its presence in the European biomethane sector by acquiring its first production facility in Belgium. The plant, located in Bree in the Flemish region, has an annual production capacity of 68 GWh, enough to supply 6,000 households with renewable energy. This acquisition aligns with ENGIE’s broader goal of producing 10 TWh of biomethane annually across Europe.

Operational since 2013 as a cogeneration plant, the facility will be converted to biomethane production and begin injecting into the local gas network by October 2024. The acquisition from the Schelfhout family follows ENGIE’s recent strategic investments in biomethane units in the Netherlands and England, signaling the Group’s continued commitment to building a robust European biomethane platform.

Cécile Prévieu, Executive Vice President of ENGIE’s Networks activities, emphasized the importance of this acquisition: “This strategic move supports our accelerated push into renewable gases, which are vital to Europe’s energy transition and decarbonization efforts. With this acquisition, we have expanded our biomethane footprint into a fourth European country, reinforcing our leadership in renewable, locally sourced energy.”

ENGIE currently operates 22 biomethane production units in France, 2 in the Netherlands, and 4 in the UK, with plans to scale production across Europe to meet growing demand for clean energy.
