MEP Nina Carberry shared a video to Instagram outlining the changes.
In the caption of the post she wrote: “Would you use a digital passport to travel around Europe?
“The European Commission has proposed the introduction of digital passports to facilitate easier and more secure travel.
“A new ‘EU Digital Travel’ app, will enable travellers to create and store their digital travel credentials efficiently!”
This way travelling would be made easier and you would not need to be concerned about forgetting your passport.
In the video, Nina explained: “We could be using our mobile phones instead of our passports to travel in Europe.”
The proposal has been made by the EU, and it will allow for faster border checks and more secure travel.
The MEP added: “The European Commission aims to have a new EU Travel App.”
This will be used for anyone entering or leaving the Schengen area.
She explained: “Since Ireland is not part of the Schengen area, this could be used when travelling from Ireland to any of the 26 EU countries part of the agreement.”

The app will allow people to create and store their digital travel credentials, acting as a digital version of your passport.
She adds that it will be voluntary for all EU citizens and will be completely free.
People were left divided in the comments section, with some for the move and others not convinced.
One person said: “I’m all for speeding up the airport experience but will airlines be providing charge points. Batteries don’t last forever and given the usual delays this could become an issue.
“Not enough charge points at the terminal in Dublin airport also”.
Someone else commented: “As long as it’s voluntary, yes! If it’s a thing that we have to always carry our mobile phone, then no! There needs to be proper measures for those who enter Ireland without any paperwork!”

WHILE we’re all used to our physical passports, the switch to digital may make travelling easier and faster.
Gone are the days when you will have to worry about having your passport with you on the way to the airport as you’ll just need your phone.
The European Commission is promising faster and more secure travel by using the new app, which will be voluntary and completely free to all EU members.
It will be used for travel within the Schengen area, which is made up of 29 countries.
These countries have officially abolished border controls at their mutual borders.
As Ireland is not part of the group, it can be used to make travel to and from this country easier, faster and more secure.
If you travel to the Schengen Area from Ireland, you pass through an immigration checkpoint and must show your passport or national identity card.
