Despite various challenges, Cyprus’ tourism industry is showing signs of recovery.

According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat), the number of tourists visiting the island increased by 1.7% in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same time last year.

UK leads with one-third arrivals

In April 2024, the United Kingdom remained the main source of tourists for Cyprus, making up 35.3% of all visitors, which is 117,902 people.

Israel and Poland were next, with Israel contributing 10.7% (35,673 tourists) and Poland 7.6% (25,250 visitors).

Holiday travel leads, business rises

Most tourists (82.1%) visited Cyprus for holidays in April 2024, which is higher than 79.3% from the same month last year.

Business trips also increased, making up 8.3% of visitors compared to 6% in April 2023.

Deputy Minister remains optimistic

Even though there were 2.7% fewer visitors in April 2024 compared to last year, Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis is still positive about the future of the tourism industry.

He noted that the first four months of 2024 had the highest number of visitors ever recorded for this period in Cyprus’ history.

Eastern Mediterranean, aviation sector challenges

Koumis recognized the problems the tourism sector is facing, such as increasing tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean, economic issues in Central and Western Europe, and problems in the aviation sector.

However, he said that Cyprus is on track to meet its goals as long as no new problems come up.

Competitiveness crucial in competitive environment

While hoping for a successful year, the Deputy Minister pointed out that the tourism industry is very competitive.

He emphasized that everyone involved needs to work together to keep Cyprus competitive in the market.

ETIAS enables hassle-free vacations

With the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) starting in mid-2025, the increase in tourists visiting Cyprus is good news for European Union (EU) travelers.

The ETIAS is a pre-travel screening system for travelers who do not need a visa to enter the Schengen Area. It aims to improve security and make travel easier.

With Cyprus becoming more popular, EU citizens can expect smooth and easy vacations on the island, thanks to the ETIAS.

Cyprus tourism resilient despite adversities

Despite problems like political tensions, economic uncertainties, and industry issues, Cyprus’ tourism sector has shown strong resilience.

The island continues to attract visitors and remains a popular destination, thanks to its lasting appeal and the hard work of everyone in the tourism industry.
