Unmissable experiences in Cyprus this winter

Hilly hikes and sensational views

Cyprus is crisscrossed with beautiful hiking opportunities, from strolls through mountain villages to more challenging climbs. The Aphrodite Nature Trail – named after the goddess who was born on the island – is a wildflower-filled route that is a peaceful exploration of the island’s rich flora and fauna. As you go you’ll take in butterflies, birds and glittering sea views on the 7.5km undulating trail. Pack a picnic and sit in the shade of a cypress tree appreciating the tranquillity along the way.

For something more challenging, you may prefer to head into the Troodos Mountains. There are various routes through the valleys and along the cliff edges, and you can even ski on some parts of the mountain from January to April. British Airways Holidays’ generous baggage allowance means there’ll be plenty of room in your luggage for hiking shoes or your favourite skiing outfit.

Nature abounds

The impressive caves around the island’s east coast are home to the famous monk seal. On dry land, you can hear the tinkling tin bells of mountain goats and mouflon, the native wild mountain sheep, when you venture into the hills. Bird lovers will be in their element: the island is on the north-south migration route, and you’ll see flamingo and waterfowl at Larnaca Salt Lake in February and March. Bonelli eagles, Sardinian warblers and red-rumped swallows are also common sightings.

Culture, cuisine and local life

It’s tempting to visit Cyprus and simply stick to the coast’s golden sand beaches. But with British Airways Holidays’ exclusive hire car partner Avis, you can head into the mountains and witness traditional Cypriot life – from strong, thick coffees at outdoor cafes to hearty slow-cooked kleftiko. It’s also a chance to appreciate local art and architecture – from the sloping roofs of village homes, to clay pottery and lacework.

Golf on the greenways

When it comes to dramatic fairways, Cyprus is blessed with more than its fair share, from the beautiful and challenging Secret Valley course in Paphos, replete with mountains and sea vistas to Aphrodite Hills, a PGA National 18-hole course that ranks among Europe’s top 100. Its setting on the cliff tops of Paphos makes a round here an unforgettable experience. Elea Golf Club, designed by English golfing legend Sir Nick Faldo, is another masterpiece ranked among Europe’s top 100, both for its stunning vistas and its excellent design.

Relaxing spas

Whether you’re looking for an end of year de-stress or you’re keen to start the new year in top mental and physical health, Cyprus is also home to an incredible array of spas. Many are based on the beach in luxurious resorts, including Park Lane Luxury Resort & Spa, with its sauna, steam room and treatment spaces, or the adult-only Ivi Mare, where you can start or end your day gazing out to sea and listening to the waves in your private outdoor jacuzzi.

And if you don’t opt for a hotel with a spa, you’ll find plenty dotted across the island – with treatments including cleansing hammam rituals, massages and facials. However you like to holiday, a trip to Cyprus is a sure-fire way to reset and refresh.
