Scientists confirm that the devastating floods in Europe this month were more intense due to climate change brought on by greenhouse gases.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the mythological birthplace of the Greek God, Apollo, the island of Delos in Greece, is already witnessing the consequences brought on by rising sea levels due to global warming. Many of its historical sites have been reported damaged due to immense flooding.

Satellite imagery from the EU’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 plays a large part in monitoring cultural heritage sites around the globe. Its snapshot of the Island of Delos in January of this year shows rising sea levels reducing the size of the island bit by bit.

The study also confirmed that nearly 150 historical sites in flood risk zones from rising sea levels located within the Eastern Mediterranean Sea could be completely submerged within 50 years: their historical importance, gone forever.

As we head into October, the summer wildfires in Greece are still raging, particularly in southern Greece where two people have been reported dead.

If 2023 “Smashed Climate Records,” It Will Pale in Comparison to What We Have Witnessed in 2024 Coastal erosion from rising sea levels

At the beginning of this year (2024), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) released its 2023 climate report that portrayed a grim future for our planet.

“Climate change is about much more than temperatures,” says the World Meteorological Organization (WMO)’s secretary-general Celeste Saulo. “What we witnessed in 2023, especially with the unprecedented ocean warmth, glacier retreat, and Antarctic sea ice loss, is cause for particular concern.”

When the WMO completes and releases its 2024 report in early 2025, after what we have all witnessed in terms of this year’s global land and sea temperatures rising, terrifying natural disasters, and extreme weather patterns, last year’s report will pale in comparison.
