Summer study abroad opportunities in Europe help Oglethorpe students grow

As her May 2025 graduation approaches, Bell felt a growing desire to explore and experience the world before leaving Oglethorpe. Seizing a last-minute opportunity, she joined LeadAbroad’s GoRome program, setting off on an adventure that would enrich her final year.

Known for famous orators like Cicero, Rome was an appropriate location for Bell to take communication courses, including public speaking, which has already taught her to be more confident in communicating her thoughts effectively.

“This experience has greatly influenced my career and academic goals because now that I have done this, I have learned there are no limits to the things you want to accomplish in life and that the entire world is waiting for you,” says Bell. “This experience has impacted my way of thinking and further boosted my self-confidence.”

Wanting to take advantage of Oglethorpe’s study abroad opportunities and gain internship experience, Dooley-Smith decided to combine her academic and professional goals. She pursued an internship in Ireland with Alternative Dublin while enrolling in courses through the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES Abroad).

“With my past experience as a competitive Irish dancer and my family’s heritage, I knew I wanted to see where all of that culture originated,” says the double communication and economics major. “Once I connected with IES Abroad, I felt like Ireland was the right place for me to explore more of my interests, gain more experience with event planning, and connect with some really amazing people.”

Both students believe studying abroad has helped them step out of their comfort zones and taught them to be comfortable with themselves.

“I have met so many amazing people and been exposed to so many different cultures,” says Dooley-Smith. “My office is super diverse and people in my program come from all over the world. With these people, I have been able to explore three different countries, have meaningful relationships, and grow more as a person.”

Rome and Ireland are just two of the many locations where Oglethorpe offers study abroad opportunities. Students can join faculty for academic programs in a specific location that immerses them in the coursework through first-hand experiences or take advantage of Oglethorpe’s partnership with Oxford University.
