Netherlands in talks to deport failed asylum seekers to Uganda

The Netherlands is planning to send failed African asylum seekers to Uganda in a scheme that echoes Britain’s now-abandoned deal with Rwanda.

It comes after a Brussels summit on Thursday at which the EU committed itself to drawing up new legislation as a “matter of urgency” to accelerate deportations and to give a legal basis for “return hubs” outside Europe.

Under the Dutch plan being negotiated with the government in Kampala, Africans who have been rejected for refugee status in the Netherlands, so far numbering about 1,000 people this year, will be deported and hosted in Uganda.
