Robyn Kelly, of Ballynacargy Boxing Club, takes centre stage this afternoon as she faces Paris Olympian and reigning European champion, Serbia’s Sara Cirkovic, in a highly anticipated 54kg semi-final bout at the European Under-22 Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Kelly, already assured of a European bronze medal, is aiming to upgrade it to silver in what will be a tough assignment against Cirkovic. The bout is scheduled for 12.45pm on Thursday.

Kelly’s rise to this stage has been remarkable, having overcome a strong challenge from Tatsiana Trushkina in the quarter-final on Tuesday. A four-time European medal winner, Kelly’s class and skill were evident as she outmatched her opponent. Now with 10 national boxing titles to her name, she is determined to reach the final and secure a silver medal to add to her impressive resume.

Kelly is one of eight Irish boxers hoping to upgrade their bronze medals after Ireland’s impressive performance on Wednesday, where five of seven quarter-finalists advanced. Joining Kelly on the podium are Martin McDonagh, Bobbi Flood, Patsy Joyce, Clepson dos Santos, Louis Rooney, Lisa O’Rourke, and Carleigh Irving.

High Performance Director, Tricia Heberle, praised the team’s preparation: “The relationships between High Performance and targeted sport science support are vital in ensuring the highest impact preparation for this team. These athletes have put in the work, and they should look forward to contesting this tournament to the best of their considerable abilities.”

With her focus on the elusive silver medal, Kelly is ready to take on the European champion and continue her outstanding run in international boxing.
