Postal traffic, as many remember it, has been changing in recent years—there are fewer letters, while the number of packages being sent and received is increasing due to the rise of e-commerce.
The digitalization of postal services is also being discussed at the 40th Assembly, where 55 European postal operators from 53 countries are participating.
Zoran Anđelković, acting director of Serbia Post, emphasized that the main topic of the Assembly is the application of artificial intelligence in the functioning of postal operators, noting that postal services have historically been promoters of new technological solutions, such as the telegraph and telephone.
“Even today, postal services in Europe and around the world must be the first to apply artificial intelligence. Serbia is trying to keep up with the world, and perhaps even stay ahead of most,” Anđelković told RTS.
According to him, by the end of the year, robots will be present in a significant number of postal centers in Belgrade, Kraljevo, Novi Sad, Kragujevac, and Niš, where they will sort goods, speeding up the delivery process to citizens, while also making work easier for employees.
Anđelković pointed out that artificial intelligence accelerates processes but stressed the importance of preserving tradition as well.
“Traditional postal traffic, when it comes to letters, will continue to exist. I’m saddened, for example, that postcards are disappearing. The delivery of bills and letters will increasingly go through the mailbox. We must preserve tradition while embracing new technologies,” Anđelković concluded.
