Prime Minister Luc Frieden has said he has told the leaders of France and Germany that their respective decisions to introduce border controls with Luxembourg are not “a good idea”.

Frieden said he sought out French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to raise the issue on the sidelines of an EU summit, which was primarily focused on the topic of migration, in Brussels on Thursday.

“I told the two colleagues clearly that I did not think this was a good idea, and I found more understanding with the French president than with the German chancellor on this issue,” Frieden said in a press conference after the EU summit.

The controls “really do not solve the problem of illegal migration”, Luxembourg’s prime minister said, adding that he had told Macron that he believes the respective home affairs ministers from the two countries should speak to each other on the phone about the situation during the coming week.

Earlier this week France informed the European Commission that it would implement temporary border checks with Luxembourg and five neighbouring countries from 1 November 2024 to 30 April 2025.

Last month, Germany re-introduced border checks with Luxembourg, setting up checkpoints along motorways where Germany shares a border with Luxembourg. Like France, Germany framed its actions as a necessary response to ongoing security threats.

The European Commission mandates that border controls between member states should be temporary and proportionate. Currently, eight of the bloc’s 27 countries have implemented some form of border controls.
