(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 19-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The 2024 Daphne Caruana Galizia Prize for Journalism will be awarded during a ceremony on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Authored by the European Parliament, the event will be opened by President Roberta Metsola and attended by accredited journalists and the 13 finalists, with one of them to be named the winner by a jury. The prestigious prize honors the memory of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated in 2017, and recognizes outstanding journalism that upholds the core values of the European Union.
The winner will be announced by representatives of the 2023 laureates, a consortium of Greek, German, and British journalists who were awarded for their investigation into the tragic Adriana shipwreck, where over 600 migrants lost their lives. The ceremony will also include speeches from key figures such as EP Vice-President Pina Picierno and jury representative Juliane Hielscher.
Additionally, a seminar on “Safeguarding Media Freedom: The Role of the European Union” will be held before the ceremony. It will feature discussions by journalists on the challenges to media freedom, including a closing speech by Matthew Caruana Galizia, Daphne’s son.
The prize, including €20,000 in prize money, symbolizes the European Parliament’s commitment to supporting investigative journalism and protecting press freedom across the globe.
The Prize, with the support of the European Parliament, is a tribute to the Maltese investigative journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia, who was assassinated in October 2017. It rewards, on a yearly basis, outstanding journalism that promotes or defends the core principles and values of the European Union, such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights.
The Prize is open to professional journalists and teams of professional journalists of any nationality to submit in-depth stories that have been published or broadcast by a media outlet based in one of the 27 European Union member states. From 3 May to 31 July 2024, more than 300 applications were submitted by journalists from the 27 EU countries for this fourth edition of the Prize.
The Prize itself, and the €20,000 prize money, demonstrate the European Parliament’s strong support for investigative journalism and the protection of journalists around the world.
