Giorgia Meloni’s government battled to save its plan to process migrants in Albania with a new law on Monday after judges in Rome blocked the initiative.
The law, rushed through at a cabinet meeting, is designed to give extra powers to the government to intern migrants hailing from “safe” countries at two centres it has built in Albania.
Judicial challenges to the plan last week meant that 12 migrants from Egypt and Bangladesh intercepted in the Mediterranean and sent to Albania — the first since the centres opened this month — were hurriedly rerouted to Italy for processing.
