Korea Enterprises Federation (KEF) Chairman Sohn Kyung-shik met ambassadors of European Union nations in Korea and urged stronger cooperation between Korea and the EU to address supply chain disruptions, industrial transition and other challenges that the regions commonly face, the lobby group said Tuesday.

Sohn and KEF leadership members met ambassadors from 23 countries, including EU Ambassador to Korea Maria Castillo Fernandez, during a roundtable at the Four Seasons Hotel in central Seoul to explore ideas on enhancing Seoul’s partnerships with each country and deliver Korean businesses’ concerns on EU regulations, such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive.

“Korea and EU nations are partners which have been cooperating in economy, trade, culture and other fields and sharing the common values of democracy and market economy for the past 60 years of diplomatic relations,” Sohn said during the meeting. “Cooperation between Korea and the EU will become increasingly important because both sides face many common challenges.”

Sohn noted that Korea is facing growing concerns on its declining workforce due to the low birthrate, and EU nations’ experiences in addressing similar problems will be valuable for Seoul’s efforts to address the issue.

He also stressed the importance of restructuring Korea’s rigid labor market, and pledged the KEF’s efforts to create a friendly environment for European companies to do business and make investments here.

Attending the meeting were ambassadors and other ranking officials from the EU embassies, namely Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden.

From the KEF, Chong Kun Dang Chairman Rhee Jang-han, Chonbang Chairman Jo Kyu-ok, Hanwha Corp. President Shin Hyun-woo, LX Pantos CEO Lee Yong-ho, Kolon ENP CEO Huh Sung and Lotte Advanced Materials CEO Lee Young-jun participated in the meeting.
