The EU’s Agriculture and Fisheries Council has reached an agreement on next year’s fishing quotas for the Baltic Sea, while has significantly increased the Total Allowable Catches (TACs) for herring.

According to Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Sari Essayah (CD), the decision means herring quotas will increase by 108 percent in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland region.

In a conservation effort last year, the EU reduced herring catch limits by more than 30 percent, compared to 2022.

The European Commission had previously considered banning herring fishing in the Baltic Sea last year due to declining stocks, but ultimately allowed the practice to continue as before but with more “reasonable quotas”.

In a statement on Tuesday morning, Essayah said she was pleased with the decision and the process behind it, because it took into account the vitality of fish stocks.

The EU’s agreement also means targeted commercial fishing for salmon can continue in all Finnish sea areas, including the area between the Finnish Archipelago and the Kvarken Strait.

However, although the practice can continue, the total quota for salmon in the main basin and the Gulf of Bothnia was reduced by 36 percent to 34,787, of which Finland’s quota is 8,989.
