Italian Parliament delegation meets with Serbian officials

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, met with the Chair of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Senate of the Republic of Italy, Stefania Craxi, with whom he discussed the most important issues of cooperation between Serbia and Italy, as well as regional and European challenges.

He underlined Serbia’s commitment to European integration and achieving full-fledged EU membership, adding that Serbia has implemented many reforms on this path.

“Chairwoman Craxi stated that Italy supports Serbia on this journey, highlighting that regional cooperation and stability are important for Italy,” said the Serbian president. Additionally, the delegation of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Italian Senate, led by Chairwoman Stefania Craxi, met yesterday with a delegation of the National Assembly of Serbia, headed by the Vice President of the National Assembly and Chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Marina Raguš.

Raguš pointed out that, during this term of the National Assembly, parliamentary cooperation and parliamentary diplomacy have been prioritized, which is important given the challenging geopolitical times. She added that on Serbia’s path to Europe, Italy’s support, as one of the EU’s founding members and a NATO member, is crucial, especially in terms of understanding the overall situation Serbia finds itself in, as well as the length of the European integration process. Raguš emphasized that Serbia and Italy have no unresolved issues in their relations, only good cooperation with the potential for enhancement, particularly in the fields of modern technologies, science, and artificial intelligence. She also thanked the Italian colleagues for their contribution through the KFOR contingent, whose presence provides a sense of security for Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija, as well as for Italy’s support in the Council of Europe when voting on Kosovo’s membership in this organization.

The Chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Italian Senate, Stefania Craxi, stated that the process of Serbia’s European integration has been excessively long, which she attributed to a lack of political will. Italy has a clear stance on this issue, which it will not change, and it will strive to foster that political will, Craxi noted. She added that both Italy and Serbia face numerous challenges, from those posed by new technologies to security and defence challenges, and agreed that there is room for improving cooperation between the two countries in various areas.

Mr. Milovan Drecun, Chairman of the Defense and Internal Affairs Committee, informed the Italian colleagues about the challenges in this sector, emphasizing that Serbia is a fundamental pillar of Balkan security, and thus, of Europe’s security. He reminded that Serbia is a militarily neutral country but is strengthening its defence capabilities and modernizing its armed forces. There is room for cooperation with Italy in the fields of defence and security, especially regarding the fight against organized crime, illegal migration, extremism, and terrorism, which threaten both countries. He also highlighted the invaluable contribution of the Italian contingent in KFOR, particularly in the protection of Serbia’s cultural and religious heritage. Additionally, Drecun stressed that Serbia is committed to resolving challenges in Kosovo and Metohija through peaceful means and to remaining a factor of stability throughout the region.

Vladimir Đorđević, a member of the Serbian delegation and a member of the National Assembly’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), discussed Serbia’s European integration process, which has been ongoing for 20 years, and the issue of migration. Aleksandar Mirković, a member of the Committee on the Oversight of Security Services and also a member of the National Assembly’s delegation to PACE, informed the Italian delegation about the pressing problems of the Serbian people in Kosovo and Metohija.

Together with colleague Dunja Simonović Bratić, also a member of the National Assembly’s delegation to PACE, he once again thanked Italy for its support to Serbia, both on its European path and in international organizations.
