Car sales in Luxembourg and the EU have dropped in September, compared to the same period last year, but electric vehicles saw their ranks grow again.

3,620 new cars were registered in Luxembourg in September – almost 250 fewer than in September last year, according to figures from the car manufacturers’ association Acea.

Luxembourg car sales figures were down year-on-year in January, March, May, June and August, but rose in February, April and July.

One in three vehicles registered in Luxembourg in September was fully electric. Hybrids accounted for 23.6%, petrol cars 26.9%, diesel cars 11% and plug-in hybrids 30.8%.

EU trend

About 6% fewer new vehicles were registered in September compared to the same month last year across the eurozone, the report also found, with three of the four most important markets in the region recording negative results: France (-11.1%), Italy (-10.7%) and Germany (-7%). Spain, on the other hand, experienced an upturn of 6.3% in sales.

The number of electric cars sold across Europe managed to rise again in September. After months of decline, electric cars accounted for 17.3% of new car sales in Europe, a year-on-year increase of 9.8%.

EV sales increased most notably in Germany, where registrations had slumped since government support expired at the end of 2023, and rose in Belgium, Italy and Spain too.

However, “the figures show that we are still a long way from the flourishing electric market that Europe needs,” said Sigrid de Vries, Director General of the Acea, in a press release.

Hybrids overtake petrol

Non-plug-in petrol hybrid cars overtook pure petrol cars for the first time, with a market share of 32.8% percent versus 29.8%.

Diesel vehicle registrations were down 23.5% and now represent only 10.4% market share.
