Wales will be boosted by the inclusion in the squad of Fishlock, who has won trophies in five different countries in her glittering career, but who has never played in a major international tournament.
“Jess’ mentality is above anyone else that I’ve experienced and she was fully focused (on her recovery) and she got the results,” captain – and Seattle Reign team-mate – Angharad James said.
“Her full focus has been on being here ready, being ready for these games. She’s a true leader and she’s a great person to have around the camp. We are glad she made it and all very excited to have her here.”
Wilkinson says Ingle and Fishlock are under-appreciated and admits the squad are desperate to advance as much for Ingle as for themselves.
“Sophie Ingle, Jess Fishlock, these are our Gareth Bales and Aaron Ramseys, but they aren’t spoken about because there hasn’t been that level of coverage of the women’s game,” she said.
“They are beyond trailblazers, they have put the game on the map in Wales, they are the voice, the face, every piece of the game is because of them.”
Wilkinson says Ingle’s absence is “tough”.
The manager added: “There is always an element of ‘do it for her’ but there are a lot of other people who came before and for us it is ‘for them and for her’ those aren’t just words in our locker room they mean something.”
Wilkinson, herself a former international who won over 180 caps for Canada, says any complacency will see her side eliminated.
“I have been impressed with Slovakia. They had some great passages of play against Scotland (in qualifying) and we disrespect them at our peril,” she added.
“Slovakia have some real threats and they will hurt us if we don’t deliver our level of performance.”
