Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just made a surprise purchase. The two have reportedly bought a home in Portugal, where they can spend additional time with their little family and plant some new roots down elsewhere in Europe.
Little is known about the couple’s new home, but one expert says that there are two substantial reasons why Harry and Meghan might want to spent time in such a country — and being closer to King Charles isn’t necessarily one of them.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just bought a home in Portugal
Harry and Meghan stepped down from their roles as senior royals back in 2020 after they were displeased with the way they were treated within the family. The press was relentless toward Meghan, and she and Harry felt like the royals weren’t doing enough to stop it.
The two have been living in Montecito, California, pretty much ever since, but it now looks like they’re planting new roots in Portugal with the home purchase. One royal expert offers up two big reasons why Harry and Meghan might have bought the home in that specific country.
Royal expert Hugo Vickers told The Sun that one reason for buying the home is because Harry is “very close to Princess Eugenie, his cousin … They get on very well together. They seem to be the main members of the family who are still very much in touch with Prince Harry.”
Vickers’ other reason actually has to do with United States politics. “There is always this fear that if Donald Trump gets re-elected as President, he will move Prince Harry from America,” Vickers said. “He has been irritated, I think, in the past by things that Meghan Markle has said about him, and probably Prince Harry as well.”
Prince Harry might also like Portugal’s accessibility
It’s possible that Harry and Meghan could eventually grow closer to the royal family, and living in Portugal would allow them to be closer to the family without being too close for comfort. Plus, Harry still does quite a bit of charitable work in Europe, so having a home there could benefit his travel, too.
Portugal is not too far from the United Kingdom. It’s less than three hours to fly from Lisbon to London, so if Harry did want to stop over in the UK while spending time at the vacation home, it would be pretty easy to do so.
As far as anyone knows, Harry and Meghan are still planning to keep their home in Montecito. However, it’s hard to know what the couple’s next move is. If they did grow closer to the other royals, that could change where they end up living later in life.
