One island that’s smack bang in middle of the Mediterranean Sea – and located between the toe of the Italian boot and Africa – is Malta and could be the perfect option as it’s a lovely 21C even in November.

Now one travel expert has revealed that why the island – which is only around a three hour hop from Blighty – could soon could become even more popular as a getaway, as well as the real reasons that A-listers love it.

Grahame Salt is the director at Frank Salt Real Estate and Homes of Quality and he explained more about the island’s appeal – including its upcoming starring role on the silver screen in Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II.

He said: “Malta’s historical architecture, much of which dates back to the 1500s and was constructed by the knights of St John (including all the limestone fortifications), provides an excellent backdrop for movies such as Gladiator, Troy, Game of Thrones and other epic style movies.

“The excellent climate allows for filming almost guaranteed for most of the year without interruption, which makes filming more cost effective.

Gladiator II is set to be released in late November – and Mel Gibson is hoping to shoot a film about the Great Siege of 1565 in Malta too.

Mr Salt explains why film crews keep returning to the stunning island. He said: “In addition, the Maltese government offers very good incentives for movies that are produced on the island.

“The country offers excellent facilities including a very particular, large infinity pool built specifically for sea scenes and used very often by movie producers.

“The island’s infrastructure is great and suits international actors and film crews, plus the fact that English is widely spoken makes it an easy destination to operate from.

“Film crews feel very comfortable filming in Malta and very often return for other movies.” He added: “The Maltese tend to be discreet and don’t bother actors and personalities when they visit and go out to eat for example, which means everyone involved can feel more relaxed unlike in other glamourous locations.”

But as well as making the most of the real-life film sets there is an abundance of other things to explore on the island – from prehistoric temples and hidden coves through to trendy bars and Michelin-starred restaurants.

One recent visitor took the travel review site to share their trip to Malta – and its ancient capital of Mdina Old Town.

They said: “The silent city is a beautiful place to visit with incredible views of Malta and amazing architecture well worth a visit for anyone interested in the history of a country.”
