People in Serbia spend most of their money on food and housing

 The average monthly income per household member in Serbia, including both monetary and in-kind earnings, was 34,230 dinars last year—16.6% higher than in 2022, when it amounted to 29,361 dinars, according to the Statistical Yearbook for 2023 published by the Serbian Statistical Office.

Urban households had higher average monthly incomes than rural ones, with urban areas reporting an average of 36,557 dinars per household member, compared to 30,593 dinars in other areas. Monetary income made up 97.2% of the total income, while in-kind income accounted for 2.8%, as reported by Tanjug.

For urban households, 99.6% of income was in cash and 0.4% in kind, whereas for other households, this ratio was 92.5% to 7.5%. The income structure of monetary and in-kind sources showed little change from 2022. The largest portion of income came from regular employment (52.5%) and pensions (30.9%). For urban households, regular employment contributed 57.8% of income and pensions 31.8%, while for other households, these figures were 41.9% and 29.1%, respectively.

Household expenditures for personal consumption averaged 34,336 dinars per household member, 16.5% higher than in 2022, when the average was 29,467 dinars. The largest portion of personal consumption expenses went to food and non-alcoholic beverages (36.8%), followed by housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (16.4%), and transport (8.7%).
