AFRY and Helen Partner on Feasibility Study for Finland’s First Large-Scale Green Hydrogen Production Plant

(IN BRIEF) Helen has commissioned AFRY to conduct a feasibility study for a large-scale green hydrogen production plant in Helsinki. This study will evaluate the conditions for producing green hydrogen effectively, supporting Helen’s goal to offer carbon-neutral district heating, cooling, and electricity to its clients by 2030. By using a systematic top-down design approach, AFRY aims to deliver a detailed analysis by mid-2025, helping Helen make informed investment decisions for this landmark project in Finland’s renewable energy landscape.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 29-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has been selected by Helen, a Finnish energy provider, to conduct a feasibility study for a prospective large-scale green hydrogen production facility in Helsinki. This study aims to assess the viability of producing green hydrogen at scale, using a systematic, top-down approach that begins with high-level project objectives and moves through to detailed engineering requirements. By incorporating the latest data and market insights, the study will help Helen design an efficient and cost-effective hydrogen production facility.

Helen’s Senior Vice President of New Business and Hydrogen, Sari Mannonen, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “As the energy sector undergoes rapid transformation, Helen is leading the charge in creating sustainable solutions that benefit both customers and the environment. A green hydrogen plant would be a flagship development for Finland.”

Ilkka Heikkilä, AFRY’s Regional Director for Renewable and Thermal Energy, shared his enthusiasm, adding, “Collaborating with Helen on one of Finland’s pioneering large-scale hydrogen projects is an exciting opportunity that will support the green transition and position Finland as a leader in sustainable energy.”

Expected for completion by mid-2025, the study will provide Helen with critical insights for future investment decisions, aligning with its vision to offer carbon-neutral district heating, cooling, and electricity to over half a million clients by 2030.
