Patmos does not have an airport. The most efficient way to get there is on the overnight ferry from Athens, in the comfort of a private cabin. Or, you can opt to fly from Athens to the island of Kos, and then take the shorter ferry over to Patmos.

What to do

Embark on a day cruise to the secluded isles surrounding Patmos: Marathi, Tiganakia, and Aspronisi. Renowned as the hidden gems of the Aegean, these pristine shores offer crystal-clear waters, virtually deserted beaches, and dreamy family-run tavernas.

For families that love a bit of adventure, a trip to Psili Ammos (which translates to “fine sand” in Greek) combines hiking, sampling traditional food, and exploring the sandy shores of Patmos. The 20-minute trek to Psili Ammos ends with an unspoiled beach — no loungers or umbrellas, just a few trees and a local, family-owned taverna powered by a generator (there’s no electricity).

The typically mild waves here are ideal for kids, too, but be sure to check for strong winds that can create rough waters and wind-borne sand that make for an unpleasant beach experience. Another tip: Start early in the morning and find shade below the tamarisk trees.

Where to stay

A stay at The Petra, a luxury boutique hotel and landmark of the island for the last 35 years, is like stepping into a warm embrace. The property, which was started by my mother, Petra Stergiou, has been welcoming guests for three generations. Here, you’ll find 11 charming rooms and the restaurant Mama’s Food — a culinary experience that offers a delicious blend of Greek flavours and where guests have even been known to join in on the fun by rolling up their sleeves and enjoying Greek cooking firsthand.
