Misguided Policies Put the European Union as an Institution at Risk, National Assembly Speaker Warns

The erroneous migration policy of the EU leadership is leading to social destabilization in Western Europe, which, combined with the effects of the EU’s economic destabilization, could endanger the existence of the European Union as an institution, László Kövér said at the 72nd COSAC plenary session in Budapest on Monday.

Speaking to delegations from the EU affairs committees of Member States’ national parliaments, the Speaker of the National Assembly stressed that the most important task of every responsible European politician who loves and serves his country and Europe is to preserve the European Union as the community of values and interests whose founders established it.

Referring to the COSAC meeting held during the Hungarian Presidency in 2011, László Kövér pointed out that the past thirteen years have seen a series of crises in Europe and the world: illegal migration, pandemic and regional armed conflicts threatening a world war.

These have also brought with them the risk that the European Union will turn from a project of peace, democracy and prosperity into a reality of war, dictatorship and impoverishment,

he warned.

He said that the misguided sanctions policy in Brussels had led to a 0.2 percent rise in EU GDP last year, compared with a 3.6 percent rise in Russian GDP. “The EU’s share of world GDP is falling year on year because of the EU leadership’s misguided economic policies. The price of electricity is 2-3 times higher and the price of natural gas 4-5 times higher in the EU than in the U.S. This puts European industry at a serious competitive disadvantage,” he explained.

He added that

the current Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU is confident that during its term it will come closer to finding the right common answers to these challenges.

László Kövér pointed out that while demographic issues are essentially the responsibility of Member States, they need to be addressed at EU level in order to halt the decline and the continuing ageing of the EU population. The solution is not to encourage migration, but to support European families to have children, he stressed. He added that Hungary is paying particular attention to border protection, curbing illegal migration and increasing internal security, contributing to the stability of the EU as a whole.

He said that EU enlargement must not be forgotten in terms of security and stability. He stressed that substantive progress is now needed, and that a consistent and non-doubletrack approach to candidate and potential candidate countries is needed. “We are convinced that there can be no more waiting in the Western Balkans and that the countries lagging behind in the negotiations, in particular Serbia and Montenegro, must be integrated as soon as possible,” he concluded.
