Ericsson and MasOrange Partner on Spain’s First Open RAN 5G Network, Advancing European Telecommunications

(IN BRIEF) Ericsson and MasOrange have launched a five-year collaboration to establish an Open RAN-ready network in Spain, integrating Orange Spain and MASMOVIL’s infrastructure to create a high-capacity 5G Standalone network. This partnership enables MasOrange to provide flexible, scalable 5G services across Spain, with a focus on sustainable technology. The project also includes deploying Ericsson’s Massive MIMO and RAN Compute solutions to enhance data transmission, network capacity, and coverage in both urban and rural areas.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 29-Oct-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Ericsson and MasOrange, Spain’s largest communications provider, have partnered on a five-year initiative to establish an advanced, Open RAN-ready network across Spain, setting a new standard for open and programmable networks in Europe. Ericsson will integrate Orange Spain and MASMOVIL’s networks, supporting MasOrange’s evolution towards a flexible and scalable infrastructure. The collaboration also includes deploying Ericsson-powered 5G Standalone (SA) technology to bring high-performance 5G services to rural areas of Spain.

With this initiative, MasOrange aims to create one of Europe’s largest and most advanced 5G SA networks, enhancing connectivity for customers across Spain. MasOrange CEO Meinrad Spenger emphasized the partnership’s significance, calling it a “decisive moment” for the Spanish market and Europe’s telecom industry, laying a foundation for innovation through open and programmable mobile infrastructure.

Jenny Lindqvist, Ericsson’s Senior VP of Market Area Europe and Latin America, highlighted the broader vision for open networks, noting their potential to drive digital transformation and growth through a developer ecosystem and network APIs.

The partnership includes sustainable, high-capacity network upgrades, leveraging Ericsson’s Massive MIMO and RAN Compute technology to boost performance while managing costs. By implementing extensive 5G Massive MIMO TDD technology and network densification, MasOrange will enhance data transmission, capacity, and coverage to meet growing 5G demand in both urban and rural areas.
