Ties with Libya are a Priority for Italy and Europe

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has reaffirmed that relations with Libya are a top priority for both Italy and the European Union. During her fourth visit to Tripoli since taking office two years ago, Meloni addressed the Italy-Libya Business Forum, highlighting her government’s commitment to revitalising collaboration with Tripoli, which has been stagnant for some time.

“Libya represents a major economic partner for Italy, and our strong trade relations attest to this,” Meloni stated. She expressed confidence that the deep-rooted cooperation between the two nations has yet to reach its full potential.

Meloni underscored Italy’s role as a “privileged gateway” for Libya to access one of the largest energy markets in the world, the European market, comprising 500 million consumers. She noted that this relationship positions Libya as a potential hub for energy flows connecting Italy, Africa, and Europe.

The Italian Prime Minister also emphasised the importance of broad cooperation with Tripoli on migration issues, aiming to combat illegal migration while promoting “legal flows.” Additionally, she announced that ITA Airways would resume flights between Italy and Libya starting next year.
