The Mediterranean island measures just 316 square km and is full of prehistoric temples, fossil-studded cliffs, hidden coves, scuba diving and beaches.
And the small city is a UNESCO heritage site and it welcomes the warmest average temperatures in the continent, while also having cheap beer and some famous filming locations.

You can pick between lush golden beach, the red sands at Ramla Bay, or the flat-rocked shoreline – with nature’s own sunloungers – at beaches such as Sliema.
There is a whole other world to explore underwater, from shipwrecks and caves to Mediterranean drop-offs – with dives suitable for everyone, from beginners to experts.

There’s plenty to see and do in Malta too while enjoying the sunshine.
St John’s Co-Cathedral was designed by the architect Gerolamo Cassar.
Built between 1573 and 1578, it’s known as the most impressive church on the island.
The interior is lined with coloured marble tombstones, frescoes and treasure-filled chapels, along with a Caravaggio in the oratory.
Nearby is the Grandmasters Palace, founded by the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta, Jean de Valette in 1574.
Today, it is the seat of the office of the president of Malta.
For more of an insight into the past, there is a National War Museum in Fort St Elmo.
While there, also visit the Upper Barrakka Gardens which has views over the Grand Harbour and Fort St Angelo.
DAY TRIPS
Malta is perfect for day trips, with many ferries going to the nearby islands.
South of the capital Valetta, you can get a ferry to three ancient and history-packed peninsulas known as the Three Cities.
You can also hire self-driving electric buggies with pre-programmed GPS and an audio guide to see the sites faster.
Mdina served as Malta’s capital until 1530, and is a limestone hilltop town full of baroque architecture.
While walking through the town, there are a range of medieval buildings, towers, winding alleys and fortified walls.
Outside the main gateway is Rabat, filled with narrow streets and catacombs.
The nearby island of Gozo measures 14km x 7km, with 35,000 residents.
Malta is also full of local dishes including lampuki pie (fish pie), rabbit stew, bragioli (beef olives), kapunata (a type of Maltese ratatouille), and sheep and goat’s cheese.
