Irish energy prices are second highest in Europe as bills well over EU average

‘The rapid growth of the population and increase in the number of data centres hasn’t helped. In recent years we’ve had to procure high-cost, high-emission, emergency gas generation to plug the gap between demand and supply.’ He also said we ‘still rely on gas to generate over 40% of our electricity, the price of which is still close to double normal levels, as the effects of the ban on Russian gas have left a huge impact on the market’.

‘Other countries rely more on hydro and nuclear power,’ he added. ‘Many power plants here are also older and smaller. In the short to medium term I don’t see much of this changing.’
