Both the Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars have landed in Finland and preparing for the games they will play Friday and Saturday as part of the 2024 NHL Global Series.
They will play those games inside Nokia Arena in Tampere, located in southern Finland.
It‘s a country that several players on both teams call home. The most prominent is Florida’s Aleksander Barkov, who grew up in Tampere. A crowd of 15,000 was in the building when Barkov brought the Stanley Cup there on July 31 after he became the first Finnish-born captain to win it when the Panthers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the Stanley Cup Final.
The Panthers have three other players from Finland: center Anton Lundell (Espoo) and Eetu Luostarinen (Siilinjarvi), and defenseman Niko Mikkola (Kiiminki).
Stars center Roope Hintz, who is from nearby Nokia, and teammates Miro Heiskanen (Espoo) and Esa Lindell (Vantaa) are also from Finland. Hintz played two seasons for Ilves (2013-15) and Barkov two seasons for Tappara (2011-13) in Liiga, the top professional league in the country.
Both teams have opened the season playing well. Florida is 7-3-1 and Dallas is 7-2.
This is the last of a series of games this season that are connected to the Global Series. The Buffalo Sabres played an exhibition match against Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) club Red Bull Munich at its new arena on Sept. 27. The Sabres and New Jersey Devils then opened the regular season on Oct. 4-5 with a pair of games at Prague’s O2 Arena.
The 2024 NHL Global Series presented by Fastenal will mark the 11th season that the NHL has traveled to Europe to play regular-season games. It’s the first time that Dallas has played aboard and the third time Florida has gone overseas for a game.
These two games mark the 10th and 11th games to be played in Finland.
Fanatics has a variety of items marking not only the visit by the Stars and Panthers but also by the Devils and Sabres earlier this month and in late September.
