In 2023, only 22% of all top decision-making positions in the national EU federations of the 10 most popular sports were held by women. There was not a single woman among the 100 best-paid athletes in the world.

To mark International Women’s Day in 2024, Parliament’s women’s rights committee, in collaboration with the national parliaments of EU countries, is organising a meeting on the participation and visibility of women in sports on 7 March. The event will look into the progress in this field, especially in the context of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

The meeting will be hosted by Robert Biedroń, chair of the women’s rights committee, while Parliament President Roberta Metsola will share her thoughts through a video message.

Follow the event online on 7 March from 9.30 CET

MEPs will also mark International Women’s Day during the plenary session in Strasbourg starting on 12 March.

The Parliament’s work on gender equality

The European Parliament constantly fight to protect women’s rights, to improve gender equality, to terminate gender-based violence and to ensure fair pay for women.

Parliament has advocated consistently for gender equality in sports. In a 2021 resolution on EU sports policy MEPs called for equal pay and greater visibility for women.
