Fianna Fail man McGrath will be grilled by MEPs in Brussels on Tuesday before being voted in for the role.

A source said: “McGrath had been expecting an economic role, so will have to show he knows his stuff about the justice portfolio.

“However, barring some unmitigated disaster, he should get the nod.”

And one of his first tasks will be to bring social media influencers to book.

In a series of written responses to MEPs last week, McGrath revealed how online harms and young people will be in his mind while developing the Digital Fairness Act.

He said: “Young people are an important consumer segment, with specific consumption patterns.

“One area for attention is influencers, who are considered as micro-businesses when they engage in regular commercial activities online.

“The Influencer Legal Hub launched by the Commission, and which is a video training on the European consumer protection standards that need to be applied when advertising, selling goods and providing services, is an example of awareness raising that I believe to be useful to expand upon.”

McGrath also told MEPs in the written responses about fostering closer cooperation between countries under the European Arrest Warrant, which he described as “one of the EU’s most successful criminal justice tools”.

He added: “There are challenges that the EU criminal justice system faces which would require going beyond the Union borders.

“If confirmed, I will continue reinforcing closer cooperation with third countries to facilitate judicial cooperation in the fight against serious crimes, including trafficking in human beings, people smuggling and drugs trafficking.”

Speaking on his appointment Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, said McGrath will “excel” in his role.

She said: “Michael McGrath has an excellent track record, and he has experience in a leading ministry.

“So, working his way through political questions, the commissioners are not technical experts. They are political leaders.

“The rule of law is a very important topic for the political affiliation of Renew, and we share the importance of the rule of law.

“He will be responsible for consumer rights, for example, [and so in] in all the topics where I think he will excel, and I think this is an important and highly respected portfolio.”

‘STRONG AND INFLUENTIAL’

And Taoiseach Simon Harris also revealed his faith in Michael McGrath, citing his “skillset” and “work ethic”.

He said: “This is a strong and influential appointment for Ireland’s Commissioner designate, Michael McGrath.

“I have worked closely with President Ursula von der Leyen in recent weeks and today’s announcement is a vote of confidence in Ireland’s candidate.

“Anti-corruption and consumer protection will amongst his many powers and duties, as well as the wide-ranging justice portfolio.

“I have worked with Michael at Cabinet and he has the skillset and the work ethic to make a massive impact in this brief.

“Whilst the Commission still has to receive parliamentary approval, I would once again like to thank President Von der Leyen for the meticulous work that has gone into forming this European Commission.”
