CRH Powers Romania’s Medgidia Cement Plant with First Wind Farm Dedicated to Clean Energy Transition

(IN BRIEF) CRH has launched a new wind farm in Romania to power its Medgidia Cement Plant, the first of its kind dedicated exclusively to a cement facility in the country. This renewable energy initiative will meet a significant portion of the plant’s energy needs, lowering its carbon footprint and contributing to CRH’s sustainability goals. With five turbines producing around 30 MW, the project supports Romania’s clean energy transition and will reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 40,000 tons annually.

(PRESS RELEASE) DUBLIN, 2-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — CRH (NYSE: CRH), a global leader in building materials solutions, has launched a new wind farm to power its Medgidia Cement Plant in Romania, marking a pioneering initiative in the country where a wind farm will exclusively supply energy to a cement facility. This renewable energy project is expected to cover a substantial part of the Medgidia Plant’s yearly energy needs, effectively reducing its carbon footprint and supporting Romania’s clean energy goals.

Eunice Heath, CRH’s Chief Sustainability Officer, emphasized the importance of this development, stating that the wind farm aligns with CRH’s commitment to a sustainable, low-carbon future in construction. By integrating renewable energy into its operations, CRH aims to provide customers with building materials that support evolving industry standards and environmental responsibilities.

In addition to advancing its decarbonization strategy, CRH is committed to using more renewable energy across its global operations, as it pursues its goal of a 30% absolute carbon emissions reduction by 2030. With five wind turbines generating approximately 30 MW and an expected annual output of 80 GWh, this project began in August 2023 and is now fully operational, set to reduce Romania’s annual CO2 emissions by around 40,000 tons.

CRH (NYSE: CRH, LSE: CRH) is the leading provider of building materials solutions that build, connect and improve our world.
