Recognizing the increasingly harmful consequences of rising hate speech, the Centre for Peace Education (CPE) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dedicated the first three-day module of the 7th cycle of the School of Peace project to the prevention and combat of hate speech, with the support of the Council of Europe.

In the new project cycle, the School of Peace project involved 15 primary schools from the Central Bosnian Canton. From October 18 to 20, 2024, in Ilidža, 24 students, accompanied by six teachers from six partner schools, participated in the module’s implementation.

The innovatively designed module, based on different conceptual approaches and perspectives, presented the relevance and application of ethical principles, as well as different perspectives for viewing ethical principles seen in all religions and cultures across the globe, with the overarching aim to highlight how important it is to focus on upholding the dignity of society’s most vulnerable people. Emphasis was also placed on recognizing and valuing diversity, together with the historical role of religious in the elimination of stereotypes, prejudice, and hate speech. The focus was also on the importance of conversations and dialogue in overcoming prejudice and stereotypes.

The concept of hate speech was gradually introduced through imaginative and dynamic exercises, including its consequences, how to react to it, and how to distinguish hate speech from other hateful and discriminatory narratives. The exercise with the strongest impact was the one illustrating that each person is an amalgamation of numerous identities, none of which should be targets for labelling, or especially hate speech.

At the conclusion of the first module of the new School of Peace cycle, each student crafted their own message against hate speech. These messages will be featured in a digital anti-hate speech campaign that the CPE plans to launch on its Facebook page.

Immediately following the completion of the module, the six participating schools, along with the remaining nine partner schools, declared the Month of Action Against Hate Speech. During this time, the students involved in Peace Sections, accompanied by teachers and with the assistance of the CPE team, will carry out about 50 educational, artistic, activist, and charity actions.

The School of Peace Project was conceived by Alen Kristić, CPE Programme Director, while the manager of the new cycle is Selvira Sadiković Mašnić.

The School of Peace is supported by the Council of Europe project “Combating discrimination, hatred and racism in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” which is funded through the Action Plan for Bosnia and Herzegovina for the period 2022-2025.
