Kapsch TrafficCom Calls for EU Taxonomy to Recognize the Environmental Impact of Road Tolling and Traffic Management

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 8-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — In a newly released white paper, Kapsch TrafficCom is calling on the EU to incorporate road tolling and traffic management into the EU Taxonomy for Sustainable Investment, emphasizing that these technologies are essential to reaching the Net Zero target set by the European Green Deal.
“Road tolling and traffic management systems have demonstrated significant potential for reducing emissions, as shown by our projects in Austria and Vienna,” stated Georg Kapsch, CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom. “For these contributions to be fully realized, they must be acknowledged within the EU Taxonomy.”
Kapsch TrafficCom’s research indicates that tolling systems on Austria’s road network could save approximately 975,000 tons of CO2 annually, which equates to 411 million liters of fuel or €43.8 million in savings. In Vienna, traffic management systems could reduce fuel use by 64 million liters, cutting 151,000 tons of CO2 emissions each year, valued at €6.8 million.
Despite these quantifiable benefits, the EU Taxonomy does not currently recognize the role of tolling and traffic management in sustainability efforts. Kapsch TrafficCom’s white paper outlines two verified methods for calculating CO2 reductions from these systems, reinforcing their alignment with the EU’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy.
