For those looking for a Christmas getaway without stretching their budget, five European cities stand out as affordable winter wonderlands this holiday season.

According to travel expert Adam Schwab, the Co-Founder and CEO of Luxury Escapes, cities like Vienna, Prague, Munich, Budapest and Tallinn should be at the top of everyone’s list.

Schwab said exclusively to the Express: “Each of these locations blends festive spirit with rich cultural experiences, making them ideal for a memorable getaway.

“As a note for next Christmas, early planning is key, especially when it comes to securing accommodations and activities. Aim to book at least three to six months in advance, as popular hotels and experiences tend to fill up fast.”

Vienna is well-known for its architecture, and during the winter, it turns into a festive city full of lights and decorations. Schwab said: “Vienna is a classic holiday destination with stunning holiday decorations and famous Christmas markets.”

Visitors can stroll through markets filled with gingerbread, mulled wine, and holiday gifts. According to the expert, the main market at Rathausplatz is a must-visit.

For British tourists, airlines such as British Airways, Ryanair and Wizz Air operate direct flights to Vienna from London airports, including Heathrow, Stansted and Gatwick. According to Skyscanner, return flights can start from £40 per passenger.

Accommodation and market visits vary in price, but a 3-night package, including flights and a mid-range hotel, typically starts around £300 per person, based on data from TravelUp.

Prague’s medieval streets make it a popular choice during winter, especially with its festive atmosphere.

Schwab added: “Prague’s charm during winter is unmatched, with historic squares and affordable food and drink options.”

In Old Town Square, the Christmas market is set up around a big tree, and visitors can find local crafts and traditional Czech delicacies.

Direct flights from the UK to Prague are available with airlines like EasyJet, Ryanair, and British Airways, departing from airports such as London Gatwick, Stansted, and Heathrow. Return flights can be found for as low as £14.99 per passenger.

According to easyJet holidays, a 3-night stay, including flights and accommodation, generally starts around £250 per person.

Munich offers a taste of Bavarian culture with traditional markets, especially at Marienplatz.

Lufthansa, British Airways and easyJet offer direct flights from UK airports like London Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester to Munich. Return flights can start from £23.99 per passenger.

A 3-night holiday package, including flights and a mid-range hotel, typically begins at £350 per person, based on information from British Airways.

For those looking for a winter holiday on a budget, Budapest must be one of the top choices.

Schwab said: “Budapest has all the elements of a winter getaway with its festive lights, ice-skating rinks, and affordable accommodation options.”

The Christmas Fair at Vörösmarty Square is popular for crafts and Hungarian specialities. Schwab also recommended the Kozmo Hotel for a bit more luxury, with three-night packages from £748.

Ryanair and Wizz Air provide direct flights from UK airports such as London Luton, Stansted and Gatwick to Budapest. Return flights can be found from £24.99 per passenger.

In Tallinn, the mediaeval old town becomes a snowy wonderland with one of Europe’s top Christmas markets. Schwab described Tallinn as “like stepping into a fairy tale during winter, with its charming market and historic setting.”

The market at Town Hall Square features handmade items, traditional food, and even Santa visits. There are also several tour options for visiting, with a four-day Christmas Market tour starting at £405 per person.

Ryanair operates direct flights from Stansted, London, to Tallinn. Return flights can start from £50 per passenger.

Based on information from Trailfinders, a 3-night holiday package, including flights and accommodation, typically begins at £250 per person.

All in all, for budget-friendly travel, Schwab advised setting fare alerts and being flexible with dates.

He said: “Travelling during the holiday season can put a strain on budgets, but savvy travellers can find great deals with a bit of strategic planning. Start by setting fare alerts on flights to catch price drops.

“Flexibility is essential; consider travelling on less popular dates, such as the days just before or after Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Utilising loyalty programs and credit card rewards can also help offset costs.

“ Additionally, booking packages that include both flights and accommodation often leads to significant savings. And don’t forget to explore alternative airports near major cities, as they can offer cheaper fares and less congestion.”
