Icelandic volcano erupts for sixth time since December

The Icelandic volcano last erupted on June 22. The island has over 30 active volcanoes.

Direct flights from Tennessee to Iceland will take off five weeks sooner than the Nashville International Airport originally planned. Citing “popular demand and strong sales,” Icelandair announced Wednesday that it is speeding up the launch of its route from BNA to Keflavík International Airport, the nearest international airport to Iceland’s capital city Reykjavík.

Instead of May 2025, Icelandair’s service from Nashville will now start on April 10, 2025.

“We are very pleased to see the great popularity of this new connection between Nashville and Iceland, from our customers in Iceland as well as on both sides of the Atlantic,” Icelandair Chief Commercial Officer Tomas Ingason said in a statement. “This new connection links Music City to Iceland as well as onwards to our 34 destinations in Europe and we look forward to welcoming Nashville on aboard.”

Since airport officials first announced the new flight in September, leaders in Tennessee have touted Iceland as the “gateway” to Europe with easy connections from there to places like Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Paris.

“We’re thrilled to see this new connection to Iceland take flight even sooner than expected,” BNA President and CEO Doug Kreulen said in a statement. “This accelerated launch of Icelandair’s new route is a testament to the excitement surrounding this connection. We’re honored to partner with Icelandair to offer our passengers more international travel options and further solidify Nashville’s position as a global destination.”

Previously, Kreulen said the projected economic impact of the first year of service between BNA and Keflavík International Airport ranges from $29.2 million to $36.3 million.

After the Thursday inaugural flight, Icelandair direct flights from Nashville to Reykjavík will commence every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday through October 2025.
