IPTO Joins ENCS to Strengthen Cybersecurity in Greece’s Power Grid

(IN BRIEF) The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) of Greece has joined the European Network for Cyber Security (ENCS) as a full member. This partnership will allow IPTO to contribute to ENCS’s cybersecurity strategies and benefit from its expertise in protecting critical infrastructure. As the operator of Greece’s high-voltage power grid, IPTO’s membership is a key step in bolstering its defenses against cyber threats. Both organizations are eager to exchange knowledge and best practices to improve cybersecurity within the energy sector across Europe.

(PRESS RELEASE) THE HAGUE, 19-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Network for Cyber Security (ENCS) has announced that Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) is now a full member of the network. This new collaboration allows IPTO to play an active role in shaping ENCS’s cybersecurity strategies, while gaining access to a wealth of knowledge, training, and research designed to fortify critical infrastructure across Europe.

As the operator responsible for maintaining Greece’s high-voltage power grid, IPTO ensures the stable and reliable transmission of electricity throughout the country. Its membership in ENCS is a key move in enhancing its defenses against the growing number of sophisticated cyber threats targeting the energy sector.

Anjos Nijk, Managing Director of ENCS, expressed his enthusiasm about the new partnership:
“We are thrilled to welcome IPTO into our network. As a crucial component of Greece’s power infrastructure, IPTO’s expertise in managing the high-voltage grid adds immense value to our collective efforts to protect Europe’s energy infrastructure. We look forward to leveraging their technical knowledge and strategic insights to further enhance cybersecurity across the continent.”

Nikos Raftopoulos, Director of ICT and Cybersecurity at IPTO, highlighted the importance of the partnership:
“In today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape, ensuring the security of our power grid has never been more critical. Our membership with ENCS will enable us to bolster our own cybersecurity initiatives while contributing to Europe’s broader efforts to safeguard the energy sector. We are excited to collaborate with ENCS members to share best practices and innovative solutions.”

IPTO’s membership in ENCS marks a significant step in strengthening Greece’s cybersecurity posture, reinforcing the country’s commitment to protecting its energy infrastructure from emerging threats.

The European Network for Cyber Security (ENCS) is a non-profit membership organisation that brings together critical infrastructure stakeholders and security experts to deploy secure European critical energy grids and infrastructure. Founded in 2012, ENCS has dedicated researchers and test specialists who work with members and partners on applied research, defining technical security requirements, component and end-to-end testing, as well as education & training. ENCS uses its network in academia, government and business to provide cyber security solutions and counsel dedicated to the needs of national Distribution System Operators (DSO), Transport System Operators (TSOs) and regulators.

The Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) is the Transmission System Operator of Greece, responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development of the national transmission system. IPTO is committed to ensuring the reliable transmission of electricity, promoting the integration of renewable energy sources, and advancing the sustainability of the energy sector in Greece and Europe.[AG1]
