The first International Conference on Universities and Cultural Routes was held on 13 and 14 November 2024 in Santiago de Compostela (Spain). It was organised by the European Institute of Cultural Routes (EICR) in cooperation with the Compostela Group of Universities (CGU).

This first edition brought together a total of 231 participants, including 58 in person, from 46 countries and 71 academic establishments. Academics, researchers and professionals explored the interactions between heritage, education and sustainable tourism for the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe.

The first conference day was structured around three key sessions, where moderators, speakers and questions from the audience powered discussions on the following topics

“Cultural Routes: Intersections of heritage, education and communities” – highlighting the role of transnational networks in strengthening local identity and European unity.
“Measuring Impacts along the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe: Economic benefits, sustainability and management strategies” – focusing on innovative models for supporting responsible tourism and promoting local heritage.
“Landscapes, tourism and emerging trends” – a holistic approach reconciling heritage preservation and new visitor expectations.

The second day was devoted to strategic discussions aimed at developing and structuring the University Network for Cultural Routes Studies, which now has 32 members, including 10 new members who joined this year. Discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation between universities, the launch of sector-based thematic groups, the forthcoming organisation of academic seminars and the planning of the next international conference.

In addition to the rich academic debates, the conference was also the opportunity for some cultural sightings, such as a guided tour of the historic city-centre of Santiago de Compostela and a walk along the Camino de Compostela which took participants to the town of Padrón.

Full recordings of the conference, as well as a report on the conference will soon be available online, providing further insights on the development of the University Network for Cultural Routes studies.
