(IN BRIEF) Gasum, the Nordic energy company, has signed a share purchase agreement to acquire 100% of the shares in Denmark-based Hærup Biogas ApS, marking its first biogas plant acquisition in the country. Hærup Biogas currently produces around 40 GWh of biogas annually, primarily from manure, which is used for power and heat generation. Gasum plans to upgrade the facility with a gas upgrading unit and a gas grid connection to maximize production capacity. This acquisition supports Gasum’s strategic goal of offering 7 TWh of renewable gas to the Nordic market annually by 2027, contributing to significant carbon reductions. Denmark’s strong agricultural sector and biogas infrastructure make it a key market for Gasum as it aims to scale up its renewable energy solutions.
(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 19-Nov-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Gasum, a leading Nordic energy company, has taken a significant step in its renewable energy strategy by acquiring 100% of the shares in Denmark-based Hærup Biogas ApS. This acquisition marks Gasum’s first entry into the Danish biogas market, further solidifying its position as a major player in sustainable energy production across the Nordic region.
Located in northern mainland Denmark, the Hærup Biogas plant currently generates approximately 40 GWh of biogas annually, primarily using manure as feedstock. The biogas is utilized for power and heat production at the plant and by the local district heating company, Klejtrup Varmeværk. Gasum is committed to maintaining its partnership with Klejtrup Varmeværk and plans to enhance the plant’s capabilities by investing in a gas upgrading unit and a gas grid connection to fully optimize production.
“Acquiring Hærup Biogas is a key milestone in our journey to significantly expand our biogas offering,” said Mika Wiljanen, CEO of Gasum. “Denmark’s strong agricultural sector, abundant manure feedstock, and efficient transport network make it an ideal market for biogas production. This acquisition not only strengthens our position in the Nordic renewable gas market but also provides valuable insight into Denmark’s advanced biogas sector.”
Gasum has set an ambitious goal of delivering 7 terawatt hours (TWh) of renewable gas to the Nordic market annually by 2027, equivalent to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.8 million tons per year for its customers. The lifecycle emissions of biogas are, on average, 90% lower than fossil fuels, and when produced from manure, the process can result in net-negative emissions.
The acquisition of Hærup Biogas is part of Gasum’s broader strategy to increase its biogas supply by building five new large-scale biogas plants in Sweden, with the first set to begin production in early 2025. Denmark, the fourth-largest biogas producer in Europe with over 8,000 GWh produced annually, plays a critical role in this vision.
This expansion aligns with Gasum’s mission to advance the energy transition by providing sustainable and innovative solutions. By enhancing the biogas production capacity at Hærup Biogas and integrating it into the Nordic gas grid, Gasum continues to drive forward its commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
Through strategic investments and partnerships, Gasum is paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for the Nordic region and beyond.
