The European Commission is expected to tighten migration measures under pressure from governments across the bloc. Irregular arrivals, seen as both a political and security issue, numbered less than one-third of the one million who arrived at the height of the 2015 migration crisis. However, migration remains a politically sensitive topic, capable of swaying election outcomes.
In response to public opinion, Germany has introduced border controls with neighbouring countries, suspending aspects of the Schengen zone’s passport-free travel. France, Denmark, Sweden, Austria, Italy, and Slovenia have followed suit.
Meanwhile, facing presidential elections next May, Poland has proposed temporarily suspending asylum rights for migrants crossing from Belarus, an ally of Russia – a move critics argue violates the EU’s charter of fundamental rights.
