There’s nothing quite like feeling a cold chill on your cheek as you wrap a scarf around you, pull down your hat over the tips of your ears, and wrap your gloves around a warm drink. Getting cozy is an art form, and according to one new study by All Clear Travel Insurance, a certain European city has perfected it.
In September, All Clear Travel Insurance released its rankings for the coziest cities in the world. It determined its list by creating a seed list of destinations regularly mentioned on social media and in publications (like Travel + Leisure) as being “cozy” and popular for fall and winter city breaks. Next, the team gave each city points based on the annual precipitation of each city, how many UNESCO World Heritage sites it has per square mile, and a few cozy-specific sites like the number of bookstores, cafes, cinemas, theaters, and museums per square mile. It also accounted for the number of Instagram posts for each city, using”‘#cozy[city].” Each data point was then weighted, and each city was given a score out of 100.
After doing all the math, the team named Brussels the coziest city in the world.
“At the top of our rankings is Brussels, the capital of Belgium, a place which plays host to beautiful architecture and great food,” the team shared in their results. “Better experienced in the colder seasons than the summer months, its medieval buildings paired with its comforting food (chocolate and Belgian waffles, anyone?) make this a great choice for a cozy break.”
Brussels also just keeps getting better as fall turns into winter, thanks to its fantastic Christmas markets that are a bit more low-key than its other European counterparts. Travelers can visit the main market at Saint Catherine’s Church to buy some warm waffles and pommes frites, shop for trinkets, or just take in the beautiful twinkling lights all night long.
Travelers could also always hop aboard the train to Paris, which took the second place spot for coziest city in the world.
“One of the world’s most visited cities the whole year round, Paris has a unique charm in the autumn and winter months,” the team noted. “Arguably more romantic than in any other season, its abundance of cafes, places to explore indoors, and vast history make the French capital a cozy-seeker dream! Plus, visiting during the festive season to see the Champs-Élysées lined with lights and the high-end fashion storefronts dressed up for Christmas is a sight that should be on anyone’s bucket list.”
Brussels and Paris were joined by Geneva, Copenhagen, and Lisbon rounding out the top five.
