THEItaly confirms one Europe’s leading destination, ranking second in the European Union for foreign tourist presences and third for overall presences. However, this excellent positioning hides a problem: a declining internal demand, fortunately compensated by the influx of tourists from abroad. If managed inclusively, the tourism industry can become a powerful engine of economic growth for local communities, creating new opportunities of work and stimulating exports, even in the less central areas of the country. According to Istat data, the direct impact of tourism on the added value of the Italian economy is equal to 6,2% of GDP, but the total weight of the sector (including indirect and induced effects) can reach 10-14% of GDP in 2023.
This panorama emerges clearly from the Forum “Build your Destination” by Unicredit, dedicated to the Tourism Industry and held today in Rome in the historic Sala Vasari of the Palazzo della Cancelleria.
The event highlighted the importance of an integrated network of businesses and stakeholders, which not only includes tourism companies, but also those of Made in Italy and services related to tourism promotion. All these actors, working in synergy, are essential to increase the attractiveness of Italy as a tourist destination. Although the industry has suffered strong shocks during the pandemic, the sector has shown a rapid recovery and is expected to continue growing in the coming years, at rates higher than the country’s overall economy.
Unicredit Industry Book
The Forum also presented theUnicredit Industry Book, Edited by Sonia Taraschi, advisory board & territorial plans Unicredit, which highlighted the continuous growth in tourist demand over the years, with the only major shock being the Covid-19 pandemic, from which international flows have recovered differently depending on the global area. Using a model built with Promethea, based on 79 thousand company balance sheets, Unicredit analyzed how the tourism sector behaved before, during and after the pandemic, outlining expectations for the period 2024-2026. The results suggest that, regardless of inflationary challenges, tourism companies had a significantly stronger growth trend than both the Italian economy and other service companies.
Despite the difficulties caused by Covid, the tourism sector has shown a rapid recovery, exceeding pre-pandemic levels. Forecasts indicate that the sector will continue to grow in the coming years, albeit at a slower pace than in the post-pandemic period. However, it is expected that the growth will be top to that of the Italian economy as a whole, with an increase in the turnover of tourism businesses, net of inflation, exceeding the average annual 3% between 2024 and 2026. Furthermore, the ENIT Report, presented by Maria Elena Rossi, highlighted issues such as the skills gap and the emergence of new trends in tourism, including attention to ESG and the focus on the Jubilee.
