Four Luxembourg restaurants among best in the world

The new edition of La Liste, the annual ranking of the world’s top 1,000 restaurants, includes four Luxembourg restaurants – and ranks a German restaurant just across the border among the top 20 in the world.

For the eighth year running, French chef Guy Savoy, who works at the Monnaie de Paris, was crowned La Liste’s best chef in the world, in a tie with nine other restaurants in the USA, Japan and China.

On the second step of the podium is a restaurant on the German-Luxembourg border: Victor’s Fine Dining by Christian Bau in Perl. The restaurant, just 1.5 km from the Luxembourg border, was awarded an “excellent” score of 99/100.

The 2025 edition of La Liste, released this week, features these four Luxembourg restaurants:

• In Moutfort, southeast Luxembourg, the two-starred Ma Langue Sourit restaurant run by chef Cyril Molard received a “very high” score of 91/100.

• In Bourlingster, central Luxembourg, the Michelin-starred La Distillerie restaurant run by chef René Mathieu scored 83.5/100.

• The Michelin-starred Léa Linster, where Louis Linster, Young Chef of the Year 2024, officiates in the kitchen, scored 81/100.

• Just behind him is the Italian gastronomic restaurant Mosconi, located in the capital, with 80.5/100.

Another establishment located not far from Luxembourg also features prominently in this ranking: La Table de Maxime in Paliseul (in the centre of the Belgian province of Luxembourg) earned a score of 90.5/100.

Based on an algorithm

La Liste is a ranking that was created in 2015 on the initiative of Philippe Faure, a former French ambassador, and the French foreign ministry to provide an alternative to the influential “World’s 50 Best”. It is based on an algorithm that compiles guides, articles, blogs and opinions from around the world. For the 2025 edition, the algorithm compared 35,000 restaurants from 1,100 publications in 200 countries.

“Gastronomy is a lot like tennis,” Faure said. “For eight or ten years, it’s only been between three or four restaurateurs – the Nadals, Federers or Djokovics of the kitchen.” While there is a certain “stability” in the rankings for Europe and the United States, “what’s really moving is Asia”, stresses the president of La Liste, with a Hong Kong restaurant, Lung King Heen, in first place worldwide.

The president and founder of La Liste also highlights “a considerable push from Korea”, known in France mostly just for its ramen. “I’ve seen some breathtaking things [with chefs who] want to become part of the world’s gastronomic elite.”

111 French restaurants ranked

Japan, long renowned for its cuisine, is the country most represented in the La Liste top thousand, with 126 restaurants, followed by the United States (114).

France has 111 restaurants on the list, but also takes the Prix d’Honneur in recognition of the lifetime achievement of Georges Blanc, the famous ambassador of Bresse poultry, whose restaurant in Vonnas earned a score of 98.5/100.

“I don’t think there’s been a ‘voltage drop’ (…) or a lack of interest in French cuisine,” Faure said. “But there is a lack of interest in its excesses.”

“A period of transition is paving the way for a gastronomy centred on pleasure,” sums up La Liste.

This year, a special “Show to table” prize will be awarded to five establishments in Dubai, Madrid, Melbourne, Paris and Tokyo, where atmosphere and fun are top of the menu.
