In the ongoing conflict between autocracy and democracy, our challenges and changes are massive, and a feeling of irritation and uncertainty is spreading across Europe like cancer. The world has never been as fraught with challenges as today.
Just when it seemed like we had beaten a global pandemic, Russia started a full-blown war on our continent. Populists promise easy solutions to complex problems, while hybrid warfare – through foreign election interference and cyberattacks – is happening every day.
Autocrats inside and outside the EU unite to consolidate power and erode freedoms. Yet, I refuse to give up. I keep on believing that people striving for freedom and democracy will prevail.
The start of the new European Commission marks the beginning of a crucial chapter in renewing Europe. We must firmly grab this opportunity because if we do not shape our future now, others will do it for us—and we might not like how it looks.
With new commissioners, a new Parliament, and a new mandate for liberals in Europe, this is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to a secure, competitive, and democratically rooted Europe.
When I was elected ALDE Party president in October, I laid out my vision and priorities for European liberals and the EU: enhancing competitiveness, strengthening our security and upholding democracy.
Restoring the EU as a global leader requires us to embrace innovation, take responsibility for our security and continue supporting free trade rooted in our values. Only a strong economy can safeguard democracy, ensure social progress and enable every European to thrive.
The trust placed in the commissioners from the liberal family and their critical portfolios closely mirror this vision. Each of them has a vital role in shaping a Europe that responds to current challenges and actively defines its future.
A safe and secure Europe
Kaja Kallas, the new high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, brings experience from the European Parliament and as prime minister to ensure the EU advances and strengthens our joint security agenda.
The EU must evolve from solely an economic power to a true diplomatic force. This is the moment for a High Representative who is guided by values and prepared to fiercely defend European interests and stand up to autocrats.
Over 1,000 days into Putin’s war of aggression, our message remains: we will support Ukraine until victory. However, this commitment to democracy and security is relevant elsewhere, too.
Enlargement is also a powerful geopolitical tool for our security. Marta Kos, the EU commissioner for enlargement, is spearheading efforts to integrate new members into the EU, extending the zone of stability, freedom, and the rule of law.
A strong and competitive economy
A strong economy that drives growth is paramount for our security, peace and prosperity. We must foster innovation and investment – not only in strategic industries but also by empowering startups and SMEs to scale up.
This requires tearing down barriers within the single market and cutting unnecessary red tape.
In an increasingly multipolar world, the EU must uphold the torch for multilateralism, actively pursue and conclude new trade agreements, build partnerships with democratic partners and deliver on the sustainable transition.
Stéphane Séjourné, executive vice-president for prosperity and industrial strategy, is driving the efforts to position the EU as a leading industrial powerhouse, accelerating our technological innovation and strengthening our sovereignty in strategic sectors like AI and clean tech.
A more democratic Europe
Michael McGrath, commissioner for democracy, justice, and the rule of law, ensures that the EU remains vigilant against attempts to undermine our liberal democracy outside and within the Union. From protecting the rule of law to countering disinformation, his portfolio underscores the unwavering liberal commitment to safeguarding the EU’s democratic fabric and the rights and freedoms of all citizens.
Hadja Lahbib, commissioner for preparedness, crisis management and equality, is working to ensure the EU is ready to respond to crises while promoting a fair, equal and inclusive society.
A united and prepared union will be able to act faster and more united, making the EU a stronger player in the world.
Liberal forces in the European Parliament, the European Commission, and member states are the driving forces of an EU that protects its citizens, upholds its values, and thrives on the global stage.
Our commitment to this generation of Europeans and the next is clear: to ensure you can live in a safer, fairer and more prosperous EU.
