Northern Ireland goalkeeper Jackie Burns makes a save against Norway
Northern Ireland’s dream of qualifying for Euro 2025 came to an end in Oslo as Norway triumphed 3-0 to claim a 7-0 aggregate victory in their Play-Off tie.
Already up against it at the Ullevaal Stadion after their 4-0 loss in the first leg, goals from Caroline Graham Hansen, Frida Maanum and Synne Jensen finished the job for the hosts, who qualify for Switzerland next summer.

Added timeWe will have just two minutes to end this tie.Meandering towards the endBoth sides seem content just to see this game out, Norway knowing that they are through and Northern Ireland trying to at least get a goal before the final whistle blows. As much as Norway deserve to win this game, Northern Ireland have defended well enough that it shouldn’t be a three-goal spread.
They get horrendously unlucky with the third, too. Synne Jensen sprints down the left wing and into a dangerous position, cuts back inside and her shot is going harmlessly wide until it cannons off the back of Laura Rafferty and loops over the head of the helpless Jackie Burns and into the net.
Agg: 7-0
Tell you what, this wasn’t far away as a corner is headed to the edge of the box to left-back Marit Lund. She takes a touch and welts the ball towards the net and it only just whistles over the crossbar from what must have been around 30 yards or so. Jackie Burns seemed to have it covered but it was travelling at some pace, too.
Walking woundedNorthern Ireland ship another blow as Laura Rafferty is helped to the touchline having taken a heavy contact in a tackle. No substitution yet but we’ll keep an eye on her at the side of the pitch.
Unfortunately the best I can say about this is it’s a half-chance but we’ll mention it anyway, a long diagonal ball across the box finding Holloway steaming onto it in a little bit of space, only for her hasty effort to sail a long way high and wide of the net.
Injury concernNot a lot has happened since Maanum doubled the hosts’ lead but there is a problem for Northern Ireland as Jackie Burns is down injured. We’ll see if she can continue.Northern Ireland are likely playing just for the win on the night now but their task has been made even harder already.
Jackie Burns tries to pass the ball towards Rebecca McKenna on the edge of the box, but the ball isn’t as strong as it needs to be and Frida Maanum steals in ahead of her, bears down on goal and beats Burns at her near post to double the hosts’ lead.
Agg: 6-0
I think this might be the first save Cecilie Fiskerstrand has had to make over the two legs as the ball works its way out to the edge of the box for Lauren Wade and she curls one towards net but its straight at the goalkeeper.
This would have been a spectacular goal from the midfielder as she takes a few touches about 30 yards from goal and proceeds to curl one for the top corner… but it hits the post and goes wide!
All the chances are coming for the striker as another delivery from the right wing, this time from Karina Saevik, meets the head of Hegerberg but her effort is just wide!
The Norwegian striker is causing chaos in the box as first she peels off her marker and curls one for the bottom corner, only for Jackie Burns to make the low diving stop, then a glancing header from a deep cross threatens again, only for it to go straight at Burns!
Off the crossbar!
The corner is floated in from the left hand side, the header goes down to the defender and her thunderous strike comes back off the frame of the goal!
So nearly a second in quick succession for the home side as Caroline Graham Hansen again makes a foray down the left hand side, drives the cross across the face of goal and Ada Hegerberg turns it inches wide of the net!
