An alleged fraudster from Luxembourg who was on Europol’s most wanted list has been arrested in Greece.

Philippe Stanislas Antoine Wasila is accused of having defrauded investors of €5.4 million between 2013 and 2014, posing as a wealthy businessman and lawyer.

Both European and international arrest warrants were issued for Wasila back in April, and last month he was added to the list of Europol’s most wanted fugitives.

His arrest in Athens on Monday was made possible by close cooperation between the Luxembourg and Greek police forces, according to a press release from the Luxembourg public prosecutor’s office.

Greek investigators, informed by their Luxembourg colleagues, had identified his whereabouts in the Athens region. Surveillance measures were then set up at strategic points, which led to his arrest in the early hours of Monday, the statement said.

The Greek judiciary must now decide on whether Wasila should be extradited to Luxembourg. The basis for the request are two European arrest warrants that were issued against him in Luxembourg.

Wasila is a French citizen, but was born in Luxembourg on 15 February 1967 and lived in the Grand Duchy for many years.

Following the publication of news that he was on Europol’s most wanted list, Wasila refuted the allegations against him, stating in an e-mail to the Luxemburger Wort that he was not on the run and had always co-operated with the police.
