Serbia negotiating to expand gas purchases from Russia, TASS reports

MOSCOW, Dec 6 (Reuters) – Serbia has asked to increase natural gas purchases from Russia as it negotiates a new supply deal ahead of the current agreement’s expiry next March, TASS news agency reported on Friday, citing Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Vulin.

Serbia largely depends on Russia for natural gas.

The Serbian oil and gas multinational NIS is also majority-owned by Russia’s Gazprom Neft, but the country is looking to diversify its energy supplies.

The current three-year gas supply deal with Russia expires in March 2025.

“We are asking for an increase,” Vulin is quoted as saying by TASS in his reply to a question about the new deal.

Russian gas has been supplied to Serbia through the TurkStream pipeline via the Black Sea since 2021.

Last month, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for helping his country secure natural gas supplies for the winter.

Serbia historically has close ties to Russia but also aspires to join the European Union.
